Postpartum depression (PPD) affects an estimated 1 in 7 new mothers and can profoundly impact mood, bonding, and daily life. Traditional antidepressants and talk therapy help many, but some new parents need other options when symptoms are severe or improvements are slow. Intravenous (IV) ketamine infusions have emerged as a promising treatment for PPD, offering faster relief and strong support for emotional recovery.

At Ember Health, we are committed to leading the way in producing peer-reviewed data, expert protocols, and clear safety standards for postpartum patients.

Here’s what you can expect if you’re living with postpartum depression and considering or preparing for IV ketamine treatments at Ember Health:

1. Rapid symptom relief, often within days

Unlike typical antidepressants, zuranolone (Zurzuvae), or brexanolone (Zulresso), which can take weeks to work and may impede mother-baby bonding, IV ketamine treatment often produces significant and rapid relief. In a real-world data collaboration with Harvard Medical School and Mass General Brigham, Ember found that over 4 out of 5 women  with postpartum depression experienced measurable relief of their symptoms, usually within days of their first sessions. This quick onset can be especially meaningful when every day matters as a new parent.

2. Support for emotional presence and connection

Postpartum depression doesn’t just make you feel sad, it can make the emotional connection with your baby distant, foggy, or even inaccessible. IV ketamine’s impact on mood can help stabilize emotions, reduce intrusive fears or obsessions, and make it easier to be present in your baby’s life.

“Postpartum depression creates a wall between you and your baby—not because you don't love your child, but because your nervous system is stuck in survival mode. When a mom is in fight-or-flight, her brain is focused on surviving, not bonding. That's why effective treatment is so urgent,” says Olivia Bergeron LCSW, PMH-C, a therapist with over 20 years of experience supporting recovery from perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, including PPD. “Every week matters, so not waiting to get help is key.”

3. A comfortable outpatient experience

IV ketamine treatment at Ember Health is delivered in a calm outpatient clinic setting. Your visit lasts 90 minutes, and you go home the same day to your baby afterward. That means you aren’t separated from your child for extended inpatient stays, a significant advantage for many new mothers over alternative treatment centers or inpatient infusion medications like brexanolone (which usually requires a 60+ hour clinic or hospital stay).

4. Safe for most breastfeeding mothers

IV ketamine has a very short half-life: just 15 minutes. The medication exits the body completely within hours. Research indicates that negligible amounts reach breast milk—far lower than normal depression oral and daily medications. IV ketamine is also one of the most commonly used forms of anesthesia for C-sections globally, providing us with evidence that even a significantly higher doses IV ketamine is safe for perinatal use. Ember Health also provides breastfeeding counseling and protocols for those who want additional safeguards. These protocols advise the patient to “pump and dump” a single time following treatment, and to time their feeds strategically around the infusion appointment.

5. Personalized care and long-term support

IV ketamine treatment is most effective when integrated with a broader care plan, including therapy with a trusted clinician. At Ember, treatment is coordinated with your existing mental health provider, and outcome monitoring helps determine when booster infusions or additional care may be needed. This team-based approach ensures consistent progress over time.

A reproductive or perinatal specialized therapist and/or psychiatrist will be key players on that team. We encourage you and your therapist to coordinate appointments between infusion appointments, and after your initial ketamine treatment, as treatment results in a 2-3 week window of neuroplasticity when it's easier to adopt new, healthful behaviors. That is when the neurological stuckness of PPD can start to dissipate, thanks to IV ketamine’s ability to help regrow neurons. This is when great therapeutic work can be done to find psychological relief.

According to Bergeron, a perinatal specialist, “The best, fastest outcomes I've seen with postpartum depression happen when treatment is layered: medication to stabilize the nervous system, and therapy to help a mom make sense of what she's been through. That neuroplastic window after a ketamine infusion is a real opportunity. A skilled perinatal therapist can help a mother move from just getting through this time to actually feeling like herself again.”

We are proud to have partnered with the specialists at The Motherhood Center and Brooklyn Parent Support, and would recommend their teams wholeheartedly for mothers who need support.

Ketamine isn’t an instant fix or a cure, but for many new mothers struggling with PPD, it opens the door to meaningful relief on a timeline that respects the urgency of motherhood.
